While on my residency project on the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve, I learned that there is a small percentage of the population that has no reaction to poison oak. Among those lucky few is Brian Morgan, one of the preserve's docents. He would handle the plant as the rest of us backed away. It's a beautiful plant, but I've learned to give it a wide berth – or risk turning as red as the inside of this vessel!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eABOUT: \u003c\/strong\u003eThis vessel started on the potter's wheel as a smooth cream-colored clay that is a mixture of stoneware and porcelain. After forming, I altered it into an oval shape and trimmed the top to give it a narrow lip. The surface design began with an overall application of black underglaze. I then began etching the leaves, and ended with taking out all of the black between the leaves. The last step was to use a tool to texture all of the background surface. After the first bisque firing, the piece was glazed inside with a red matte glaze. And they really are sticky. According to preserve docent Gil Eastman, Native Americans on the California coast used it as a medicinal plant. According to the USC report \u003cem\u003eNative American Uses of California Plants\u003c\/em\u003e, gumplant was used to treat skin infection, to ease bronchial distress, and as a treatment for poison oak. But the Cobwebby Thistle is another story.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Cobwebby Thistle is an endangered plant that volunteer weeders work to protect. You'll recognize the cobwebby because its unopened flower heads are laced with fibers resembling cobwebs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eABOUT: \u003c\/strong\u003eThis vessel started on the potter's wheel as a smooth cream-colored clay that is a mixture of stoneware and porcelain. If there is a slight breeze, you can sometimes hear their song. I think the grass is truly beautiful and love the graceful patterns as the wind shifts. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThough it's a non-native grass originally introduced from Europe, it's now a part of the California landscape. It's a hardy plant that grows in succulent mats that spread along the sand, and thrives on sea spray. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt's a real help in curbing erosion along the bluff edge since its impressive root system can extend 15 feet or more. Watch for the yellow flowers from May - October. You'll see that the stems always seem to be covered with grains of sand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eABOUT: \u003c\/strong\u003eThis vessel started on the potter's wheel as a smooth cream-colored clay that is a mixture of stoneware and porcelain.
